Yoga's origins lie in ancient India, tracing back thousands of years to the Indus Valley civilization around 2700 BCE. Early evidence of yoga practices can be found in texts like the Vedas, particularly the Rigveda, suggesting contemplative practices. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, compiled around 400 CE, provided a foundational framework for yoga philosophy. Over centuries, yoga diversified into various schools like Hatha, Bhakti, Karma, and Jnana yoga, each emphasizing different aspects of the practice. Today, yoga is a global phenomenon, retaining its ancient roots in spirituality and mindfulness.

Historically, yoga was primarily practiced by men and boys in ancient India. During its early development, yoga was often pursued by ascetics, monks, and scholars who were predominantly male. The ancient texts and scriptures that codified yoga practices were primarily written by and for men. However, over time, yoga became more inclusive, and women began to participate in its practice as well. Today, yoga is practiced by people of all genders worldwide, with no specific gender restriction.

"Atman" refers to the individual soul or self in Hindu philosophy, representing the eternal essence beyond the physical body and mind.
